This is a question I posed on the DISBoards. I admit that I got some really good answers..
I am in the planning phase for two trips I have planned for
Disneyworld. One is in May (just for Kelsey and I) to participate in the
RunDisney Event at AK. The flights are every bit of $350 plus minimum RT per
ticket (so far). This is a far cry from
what things were when AirTran was a strong competitor. This past summer 2011, I
was able to get flights for $148 round trip for each ticket. I got the tickets
early (in December 2010), so I am sure that had something to do with it. I
think that I have gotten spoiled by AirTran, but in this economy, I am not
surprised by the financial troubles and Southwest taking over.

In June we are THINKING about doing a Driving Adventure ONE
WAY to visit Vero Beach, Key West, and then the World. Again, I am searching for
ONE WAY flights back to DFW from MCO, and the ticket prices are about $250 or
worse per ticket, one way (so far). That is at least the plan, for now. A final decision
will be made soon so I will discuss that later.

Please do not get me wrong, Southwest Airlines will fly to
Orlando, however, I am not the biggest fan of layovers, and because I am a
slight control freak, not being able to select my seats (to be near my
children) makes me nervous. I understand that we can do the whole check in
early and depending on the boarding letter (A,B,C etc.), that will determine if
you can get a seat in an ideal location. I have flown Southwest before, but it
was just me on the flight, so no worries at that point. No issues whatsoever.
Perhaps when the Wright Amendment expires things could change.

It looks like Spirit Airlines (even with the baggage and
seat selecting fees) is the likely choice for now. I have no problems flying
Spirit even though it will be my first time flying them. I just wanted to keep
American Airlines as a choice, because of the times they have available. It is
a sad day, when we think that paying the extra fees is much better than paying
the higher prices with American.

Am I crazy, or does American HATE DFW, or is it that AirTran
is no longer a competitor and they no longer see the need to offer decent
prices? I am sure having no competitors is what is driving the prices. I
understand that in this economy, everyone is hurting in one way or the other,
but still. I just had to askJ.
I know they don’t hate us, because it is what it is… Business.

Thanks for stopping by my blog, I'm following you back! I live in DFW as well, and yes I don't know what is up with AA. I believe they recently filed for bankruptcy, I would have to think part of that is due to the high prices they charge and fliers choosing other options!
I'm with you, I love Southwest but I didn't realize they didn't have all the options of choosing seats (I've only flown them alone). Good luck on finding a good option!

Hey Raquel-
I'm not a frequent flyer but I do vaguely remember AirTran and I actually had good service from them.
Personally, i prefer Delta but only because they haven't had a crash or major issue since the 80s lol.
Also, I'm following you back. Thanks for stopping by my blog!
Glad you stopped by... says

Amanda, I think that they did file for bankruptcy, perhaps it is worse than I thought. Radiant, my husband I used to be frequent Delta fliers but they do not offer non-stop flights and the prices are pricey. Thanks guys!

Thanks for the follow – I am following back and am looking forward to following your blog. I know nothing about airlines except they all over charge! We drive just about everywhere these days…cheaper and at the end of the day easier. Hard to believe that 12 hour trips with the Bull and 4 calves in tow would be less stressful then airline travel but for us, it really is.

I love Southwest. It's so much cheaper and I'll take the layover any time b/c 99% of the time me and my bags get there on time, which is more than I can say for the other airlines. Following you back!
