First Solo & RunDisney Trip

October 22, 2012 by Raquel Leave a Comment

Where to begin.
I turned 40 years old in March and I
decided it was time to break out if the box and do something different. That
something came in the form of my first solo trip to Disney World with a
sprinkling of Disney Mom Panel Luncheon and a RunDisney event (Tower of Terror
10 mile run). More on the run later (Yikes!) 🙂
During this planning phase, I have
to mention that I did manage to lose about 15 pounds, which was awesome!!! :o).
I am DVC member, so I was able to stay at Old Key West Resort and I got a
really good deal on airfare. As the day approached, I cannot lie, I started to
regret my decision to go alone. I am so used to being with my husband and
children, but that was not in the cards, this time.
I boarded the plane, and the flight
was (thankfully) uneventful, mostly because I was too engaged with the Avengers
movie that was playing on my iPad. I arrived in Orlando, and headed for the
Alamo Car Rental kiosk, got my car, and was on my way to the World. I did make
a stop to buy socks and to have some lunch at the Macaroni Grill (the food was
free, but not tasty).
After I arrived at the World, I checked in at the
Wide World of Sports, to gather my necessitates for the run. I checked in to my
hotel and after a bit of rest, it was time to meet my DisFriends (Elantrice and
Sara) at the Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party.
I had such a great time, although I did miss the occasional telling my kids,
“stop that”, don’t hit your sister”, “be nice”.
After the party, I had to make a stop at Walgreens because; my knee was
beginning to act up. I arrived at my room about 2:30 AM, took a shower, and
then slept. I woke up and got ready to attend the Mickey Moms Panel Fan
Luncheon. It was such a great experience, filled with food, friends and an
atmosphere of fun. After the lunch, I had the pleasure of speaking with Laura
Spencer and her family. It is always great to meet others with the same
interest.
I then went back to my room to get some rest, and hopefully, rest my
knee before the Tower of Terror 10 mile run. I then got ready and headed to
meet my DisFriends, and from there we arrived at the Hollywood Studios parking
lot (basically the holding cell prior to the run – lol, but it was fun!).
The moment of truth has arrived, and I am so
nervous, not just for the run, but for my knee. I was in the last corral, so
that was at least an additional 30 minutes of wait time. The gun sounded and I
began my run. I was actually proud of myself already. I got to the first half
mile and I noticed the infamous balloon lady (the actual pace marker who walks
the required pace – You must stay ahead of her). I tried and tried, but my knee
completely gave out. I made it to the first mile marker, but alas my chariot
awaited me. Myself and several others boarded the bus and were shuttled to the
“Fast Pass Area for the “special winners”, where we were treated to applause and cheers, and were
presented with our medals. The great thing about it was that I was able to get
more than one take of my picture – Pixie Dust! (There was not a line, of
course). I am glad I finished before all those pesky runners were done :o). I then waited for my friends to finish, who did so well – I
am so proud of them!
The next day, I woke up and headed
to the airport and back to my reality.
Question is, would I do it again???
Answer… in a heartbeat!! Even though, I did not finish the race, I was able to
take away so many great memories from the peace and quiet to the Mickey’s No-So
Scary Party, to the Moms Panel Fan Luncheon. I will be taking another stab at
another RunDisney event in February 2013, but I think that I should stick to
the 5K, in the future 🙂
