I have to share an experience I had with a student the other day.
For the past couple weeks, the days had been slightly difficult and on day three, I received a call from a co-worker who explained that a student was having some difficulties and wanted me to keep an eye on them. I told her that I would, so as soon as I hung up, I called out the name of this student and they approached my desk. I just told them that if they needed anything to let me know. The student said ok.
The day went on and ended and the student did have some difficulties as the days went on, but I decided not to react, because I understood that is not what they needed at that time. I allowed the student to leave and have a “time out” to calm down and I sat the student next to me while they completed their work. By the way, I found out that this student is a phenomenal writer and knows how to articulate their thoughts on paper. How awesome is that for a 6th grader? Also, during this time, I was firm with the student to also get them to change the behavior they were exhibiting. The student listened and we made it through.
Friday, was the end of Teacher Appreciation Week, and I was in the library creating ID Badges for students. The student in question walked in and handed me this beautiful gift.
