Ralph Breaks The Internet : A Spoiler-Free Review

November 20, 2018 by Raquel Leave a Comment

Who has seen and enjoyed Wreck-It Ralph? I know I did. When it was announced that a sequel was in the works, I was on pins and needles waiting for details and boy did they bring it.

Synopsis

In RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET, video-game bad guy Ralph (voice of John C. Reilly) and best friend Vanellope von Schweetz (voice of Sarah Silverman) leave the comforts of Litwak’s arcade in an attempt to save her game, Sugar Rush. Their quest takes them to the vast, uncharted world of the internet where they rely on the citizens of the internet—the Netizens—to help navigate their way. Lending a virtual hand are Yesss (voice of Taraji P. Henson), the head algorithm and the heart and soul of the trend-making site “BuzzzTube,” and Shank (voice of Gal Gadot), a tough-as-nails driver from a gritty online auto-racing game called Slaughter Race, a place Vanellope wholeheartedly embraces—so much so that Ralph worries he may lose the only friend he’s ever had. Directed by Rich Moore (“Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph”) and Phil Johnston (co-writer “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Zootopia,” writer, “Cedar Rapids”), and produced by Clark Spencer (“Zootopia,” “Wreck-It Ralph,” “Bolt,” “Lilo & Stitch”), “Ralph Breaks the Internet” hits theaters on Nov. 21, 2018.

Girls Rule

I’m sorry but, “Girls Rule” in this film! I love to see female representation in any film because all too often, men are seen as the heroes. Don’t get me wrong, male heroes are great, but a “(s)hero”? even better. So let’s quickly discuss these women.

Vanellope von Schweetz

Vanellope has so much beautiful energy and has a heart the size of Texas. She just wants to be her own person and wants to experience new and exciting things but is afraid to because of her friendship with Ralph. I love the friendship she has with Ralph because they both accept each other for who they are and there are lessons to be learned by witnessing them together.

YESSS

Yes, that is Yesss with three s’s! Yesss is the character who holds the key to the most popular videos on the internet. In other words, she’s “the head algorithm and the heart and soul of the trend-making site “BuzzzTube”. I love it when women are running things. She brought the style, the sassiness, and the knowledge to get the job done to help Ralph and Vanellope on their journey.

Shank

Shank is my kind of girl! When Vanellope and Ralph meet this fearless driver of the online game “Slaughter Race”, they too get to experience how fierce she really is. When you see the movie, take note of her driving skills.

The Princesses

Let me say that these women gave me life. It’s not every day that you see a princess just hanging out and being who she really is. In a world where perfection dominates who we are, it was refreshing to see them as they truly should be (in my head). A side note: A HUGE shout out to the animators and everyone involved for ensuring that Princess Tiana looked like other girls of color.

Will The Kids Love It?

Yes!! I believe kids will love this film and I recommend it for kids of all ages. There are some slight dark scenes, but they are short and won’t take away from the experience of seeing the film. I found it be to an impeccable family-friendly film that can be enjoyed for years to come.

Speaking of family. Check out these activity sheets, they will give you the opportunity to discuss the film while having some fun using the sheets. Feel free to print and enjoy as you see fit.

Overall

Usually, when you experience a sequel, it can be either unrelated to the previous movie or can be too much like the first, but this movie had a balance and with everything that occurred you will be excited to see what happens next. When you experience “the internet” on the big screen, you get a sense of what the internet could be like (personally, it’s kind of what I have always imagined in a sense). Not only was the movie fun and whimsical it was also informative. I can see it being shown to teach topics related to the internet and how it functions. For example, you see how to autocomplete “works” with KnowsMore and I had to chuckle a bit because I feel the frustration that is associated with it. The movie also hits the nail on the head for when it comes to friendship. The friendship between Vanellope and Ralph is friendship goals for all of us.

One hint (no spoiler): Stay until the end!
