Picture it… It’s a Friday night and you have had a long week of work, traffic and after-school activities. However, the kids want to spend time together, what should you do? Well, you find some energy and plan a family activity, but give it a holiday theme. Each family activity involves something different to break up the monotony of what we are are used to. I figured this occasion would be no different. Here’s the plan…. We’ll incorporate some delicious pizza from WinCo, peppermint candy craft, and no family night is complete without a refreshing COCA-COLA®.
That Sounds Great, But What Did You Eat?
If you are familiar with WinCo, you are aware that they are a proud employee-owned Supermarket that is considered the Low Price Leader. You probably also know that they have WinCo Pizza which contains quality ingredients for a low price (Score!). They have pizza varieties that will satisfy any member of take and bake pizza that is available in the deli section of the store.
Let’s face it, food is a great reason to gather together and everything thing else adds to the excitement.
What I love about WinCo is that you do not need coupons or an ad to save money, and that is important especially for those of us that like to save money. They limit their advertising which saves them millions of dollars that they then pass on as lower prices to their customers. One thing to remember is that at WinCo Foods, the price fluctuates, but be sure to look for the green tags because those items are on sale.
It’s Not A Family Fun Day Without An Activity!
Because we are so close to the holiday, I figured why not decorate the tree! We have had our tree up for a few weeks, but sadly, there are no ornaments on the tree yet (I know, I know, it’s sad). I meant to include them sooner, but time slipped away from us.
You might be asking, what are you guys creating? Well, I am glad you asked. We are making some Christmas ornaments out of peppermint and butterscotch candies. In addition to transforming them into ornaments, we are going to decorate them and give them a unique twist (as we see fit, individually).
What Supplies Did You Need?
The beauty of this project is that you can use what you want to make your ornaments unique and tailored to your family’s style.
- Peppermint and Butterscotch Candies (I bought mine from my local dollar store).
- Cookie Cutters (the metal ones work best)
- Cooking spray
- Crafting Glaze (spray or one you can brush on works)
- Various craft item such as small goggly eyes, buttons, ribbons, glue, etc.). Your choice
- Drill (if you choose to use one for holes).
- Cookie Sheet
- Parchment Paper
All of Those Supplies, Now What?
Full disclosure: I attempted my first try and let’s just say, it didn’t come out as beautiful as I thought it would. What do you think? Is there a career in baking in my future?
I figured out where I went wrong so instead of making one layer ornaments, I added a second layer to make them thicker. That did the trick.
Step 1
Spray cookie cutters with cooking spray, so that they can easily be removed.
Step 2
Arrange the candies within the cookie cutters. Double layers is best.
Step 3
Place cookie sheet filled with ornaments and cook on 350 degrees, for approximately 8-10 minutes (be sure to keep an eye on them). Remove from the oven and cool.
Step 4
Once cooled, use the drill to drill a hole into ornament. Use a slow steady drill because if you drill too fast, the ornaments may break.
Step 5
Glaze the ornaments. (You can use a spray or brush it on – I used a spray) Be sure to complete this step outside and allow time to dry. This will allow them to last longer than one holiday season.
Step 6
Decorate as desired. We prefer fun and silly designs.
All that is left is the place these babies on our tree. It’s so good to finally have ornaments going onto the tree after all this time.
Now throughout our fun family activities that included making our ornaments and devouring this delicious pizza, we filled our glasses with ice and Coca-Cola. No matter how you slice it, pizza just tastes better when you are spending time together, eating your favorite snacks and drinking a beverage like Coca-Cola. Am I right?

Until Next Time
These are so cute! I’ve never thought to do this before but I know my kids would love making these ornaments. {client}
Thank you so much! Yes, your babies will love it, if they don’t eat the creations first. 🙂
