Walt Disney Pictures and Marvel Got Inclusion Right in 2018!

September 18, 2018 by Raquel Leave a Comment

Right now, with everything going on in the world right now, I am choosing to remain positive because I know where there is love, there is change. Change is the only thing that keeps hope alive for what we dream and desire in our futures. It is my hope this little piece of positivity and mention of inclusion will be a bright spot in your day.

This year, I am seeing way more representation in the movies and with the literal BILLION Dollar success of movies like Black Panther, many are taking note of how important inclusion is for everyone. Prior to this year, there was some minority presence in some Disney / Marvel movies, but nothing quite as spectacular as 2018.

I am a Disney / Marvel fangirl (in my heart) and have always supported almost every movie that has been released. However, please note, this in no way discounts the involvement of EVERYONE else in these movies.

Let’s quickly discuss a few examples…

Black Panther – Enough said! Too many to name individually but it was filled with all kinds of #BlackExcellence throughout the movie!

  • Avengers – Infinity War – The major inclusion of many the Black Panther characters with part of the fight fought in Wakanda! Of course, we can’t forget about Director Ryan Coogler, Falcon and War Machine.
  • A Wrinkle In Time was not only directed by the talented Ava DuVernay but also stared Oprah Winfrey as Ms. Who.
  • Solo A Star Wars Story – Hello!!! Lando, I mean Childish Gambino, I mean Donald Glover (you know what I mean). #Winning
  • Incredibles 2 – Frozone AND his wife Honey! Now we didn’t see Honey, but you know she was there in full effect!
  • Ant-Man and the Wasp – T. I. Brought the comedy and I couldn’t get enough of him.
  • Disney’s The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. The remarkable and talented Misty Copeland, THE Morgan Freeman and Mr. Jayden Knight. It’s a beautiful story and I can’t wait to see Disney’s interpretation of this classic, November 2, 2018.
  • Disney’s Ralph Breaks the Internet – We have Yesss, the “algorithm” (Taraji P. Henson). I can’t wait to see this one with my family, November 21, 2018!
  • In my opinion, a result of this inclusion means more “individuals of colors” are now new fans of the movies that weren’t fans before. In my own life, I have friends that didn’t make it a point to see Disney / Marvel movies, but when Black Panther was released they changed their tune and experienced more movies since then.

When we can see “US” it makes us excited and know we matter too! Kudos Disney Movies and Marvel!

    Until Next Time!
